A newly retired novice rancher buys the property adjacent to a ranch operating a veteran’s PTSD recovery program. She discovers a retired unit of Marine Raiders on their own manhunt for the killer of their benefactor, Bill’s, parents. In the course of their manhunt, Bill discovers the man they are hunting is also the man who killed Ruth’s brother, a disabled Navy SEAL. 

When the killer realizes he’s being hunted, he turns the tables and becomes the hunter himself, with murderous intent.  Bill and his team become the headstrong Ruth’s big brothers and protectors to keep her from becoming a fourth murder victim.  

The final confrontation is a crescendo of explosives, gunfire, injuries, and death that shakes the very foundation of the relationship that has blossomed between Bill and Ruth.

The ranch hands seldom had the opportunity for social gatherings and made the most of it. The temperature rose into the nineties and the wind from the southwest began to pick up. KING OF HEARTS   By MASON TAYLOR-TAITE AN EXCERPT Later when it was dark out, house lights had been extinguished or at least dimmed. Five men drifted silently into the house, one at a time. All outfitted like Bill. All were armed and carrying night gear. None of them showed any emotion on their faces. Not even Bill.  “Listen up!” Bill spoke in a hushed tone, clearly in command. “Are we all set on communications?” “All checked out, Colonel. We’re set.”  “So, everyone’s clear, right? We’ve already gone over this in minute detail. Take him alive…shoot only in self-defense. Mark, you arrest him…call in your deputies when we have him. Men, Ben didn’t just kill my parents. He killed Ruthie’s brother. He was a Navy SEAL, so he was our brother, too.
